Never say, "I don't want to sell!"

by CareerMVP.com

Employers often ask the question, "Is there anything you do not want to do?" One of the most common and least effective answers is, "I don't want to sell!" We certainly understand why applicants would say this with all of the bogus sales jobs out there and the number of employers that want every employee to literally sell. However, you really have to remember that the number one goal of the company is to sell. Technically speaking, almost everybody in the company may somehow take part in the sales process. Of course, we can all think of exceptions. But, there are very few.

Your best strategy is to read the description of the position to see if it actually requires selling versus basic support of the sales process. Also, determine what type of sales it is. Are you picking up the phone and cold calling customers or are you simply informing current customers about new products and promotions. The latter could easily be considered customer service. If you're paying $12 per month in fees for your bank account, wouldn't you want the customer service rep or teller to let you know the bank now has a free account? If you're getting your tires rotated/balanced and the service manager suggests front-end alignment because your tires are wearing unevenly, don't you want them to tell you? What if for an additional $10 per tire, you can get free alignment, rotation and balancing for the life of the tires? Whether you want the product or not, some selling is just good customer service. It informs you of products or services that may be beneficial to you and lets you make the decision.

So if you tell an employer you do not want to sell, they might be hearing that you don't even want to do customer service. This means you need to be in a position where you never deal with the customer.
